. Communications giant AT&T will offer clean tech pioneer Petra Solar's Smart Grid interactive solar electric systems, which are designed specifically for installation on utility distribution poles. Said to be the first of its kind, the systems act as individual power generation stations and combine solar power, Smart Grid technologies and power management technologies to give utilities additional tools to improve power quality and grid management. The Petra Utility Grade SunWaveTM UP Series systems are installed on streetlight and utility poles and connect directly to secondary voltage lines at the pole. Petra is now installing up to 200,000 of the intelligent solar units throughout New Jersey's six largest cities and in 300 suburban communities. They will run on AT&T's wireless network. "This new relationship with Petra Solar marks another step into integrating our wireless network capabilities with the benefits of Smart Grid technology and the leading-edge renewable energy solutions available today," said Michael Antieri, president of Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions for AT&T Business Solutions.
Quick Take: This is yet another innovative combination of technologies focused on critical Smart Grid issues. It will be interesting to see the results.
