New Infrax Systems module helps utilities with crucial challenge

Quick Take: Utilities are increasingly overwhelmed with the data pouring in from smart meters and sensors. Some of them are trying to send all the information up to the main office. Then they try to sift and sort through it all. But others are turning to techniques perfected in sectors such as financial services where data volumes are even higher. Often called "complex event processing," the technique examines data at the edge where it is produced to pull out alerts, problems and exceptions. Then it passes those important events for action immediately, so they don't get lost, delayed or ignored. Florida-based Infrax Systems announced the launch of EventManager -- a new rules-based software module that is a key piece of its utility-focused Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) platform for end to end management of utility assets and resources. According to the company, EventManager can detect and react to an incident or event and invoke network controlled locks, video cameras, alarms, etc. to optimize access control and security policies.

"The ability to integrate an automated rules-based monitoring and response gives the utility the capability to provide a proactive response to unforeseen events," said Paul Aiello, Infrax CEO. "Tracking fixed assets and mobile inventory allows utilities to better manage purchasing and operations while implementing a Governance, Risk and Compliance Management (GRCM) policy."
