And there are always a few blips and surprises – from ballot-stuffing shenanigans to companies overlooked or perhaps over-promised. But we had nearly 4,000 votes cast in this year's competition so you can be sure we're paying attention to the results.
Below in alphabetical order are the 11 smart grid companies that will be on our radar in 2011 as selected by SGN readers and friends. (The summaries provided were taken from their websites.)

Calico Energy– Offering a secure platform that simplifies smart grid data management and services – Calico Energy Services provides customers with energy intelligence, improved efficiency, reduced costs, and increased profit through a unified solution.
Consert– Consert gives energy conservation the attributes of generation and offers utilities the opportunity to gain operational savings, address peak load, and realize new revenue streams, all by empowering consumers to set, monitor and reduce energy consumption.
Digi International– Digi is an innovator of wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) device networking products. Its embedded and non-embedded products are marketed under the Digi® and Rabbit® brands.
Echelon– Echelon's smart metering infrastructure uses signaling technology that puts the control and communications of a smart metering system into a utility's distribution lines — the same lines used to deliver electricity – and can be extended beyond the meter into homes and other devices.
Electranetics– The technology company's WattBoss™ energy control platform provides a quantum shift in the consumer and utility dynamic by enabling consumers to transform how they consume and save electricity.
Schneider Electric– Schneider Electric offers integrated solutions across multiple market segments, including leadership positions in energy and infrastructure, industrial processes, building automation, and data centers/networks, as well as a broad presence in residential applications.
Tropos Networks– Tropos® Networks is a worldwide leader providing reliable and flexible wireless communications networks for utilities to build and control the smart grid. The company has more than 800 customers in over 30 countries.
Viridity Energy– The Viridity Energy VPower™ system is a proven technology platform that transforms a customer’s portfolio of buildings and optimized supply and demand-side energy resources into a 24/7 virtual power plant.
Xtreme Power– Delivering integrated smart power management solutions from 500kW to 100MW, Xtreme Power's proprietary solid-state power management and integrated storage enables efficient and available power.
