with investments totaling $46 billion globally anticipated over the next five years. So says cleantech market intelligence firm Pike Research in its new report, Distribution Automation. "Distribution automation is emerging as the next hot topic in the smart grid industry," said Pike senior analyst Bob Gohn. "For utilities, DA deployments can yield significant cost savings through measurable improvements in operational efficiency, reliability, service quality, and energy conservation – all of which can contribute to customer satisfaction. In many cases, we expect DA will yield stronger return on investment than smart meters or other high-profile smart grid initiatives." Most of the utility spending will be for distribution switchgear, including upgraded distribution transformers, reclosers, sectionalizers, disconnect switches and fused cutout switches, the report says. The report also forecasts a particularly hearty shot of growth over the next few years.
Quick Take: No, the report isn't saying metering will be kicked to the curb in favor of DA. But trends and shifts in focus are commonplace in young, evolving sectors as new and better ways of doing business are explored and put to the test.
