1 Quick Take: Back in 2006, we were one of the first to predict a boom in distribution automation. Although the recession and the distraction of the smart meter-focused stimulus delayed things for a year or two, the sector is coming on strong now, as you can read below. Note that, according to this research firm, distribution automation sales will pass those from smart meters later in 2011. IMS says that utilities had been holding off on distribution automation projects while they waited for grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. "This had an adverse affect on revenues for distribution automation suppliers until financing finally snapped back to deliver a record year for those in the segment," an IMS press release noted.
The release also said initial smart grid market growth was primarily in metering, as a result of government incentives. But it added that the smart meter market is expected to shrink over the next few years – and that distribution automation revenues will continue to increase supported by a record 2010.
