Editor’s note: Perhaps one of the biggest issues facing electric utilities as they build out the Smart Grid and deploy smart meters is how to manage the resulting data surge. In collaboration with Accenture, a global leader in Smart Grid consulting, SGN presented the High Performance in Data Management webinar. As a follow-up, Accenture experts responded to many of the audience-submitted questions that weren’t answered during the event due to time constraints, including the following.
Will data management patents originating in other fields impact standardization of Smart Grid data management?
In general, large volume data management, warehousing, business intelligence and operational/technical analytic challenges have been solved in multiple industries for many years. The financial services and retail sectors have been on the forefront of real-time data management, analytics, enterprise data warehousing and BI implementations. Consequently, it is difficult to imagine that applying these concepts to the Smart Grid domain to facilitate enterprise Smart Grid integration could be prevented in any meaningful way by some pre-existing IP. What is more likely is that technological innovations in the field of data management could change how we approach the problem of Smart Grid data management in the future.
