A Renewable Energy World report has found that while many states (29 and the District of Columbia) have renewable energy standards (RES), there are far more differences than similarities between them. The most basic mandate they have in common is a requirement that utilities include energy from renewable sources in the electricity they sell. But read the report to see how different the RES are, the many obstacles to implementation — and possible consequences.
Quick Take: It would be easiest to insist on consistent RES nationwide, but the states don't all have the same renewable energy sources, and their needs and capabilities differ. And, Congress has yet to weigh in. States with aggressive standards programs are watching, of course, and so is the renewable energy industry and no doubt anyone else concerned about progress in integrating renewables into the Smart Grid.
