.

Oklahoma Gas & Electric got the official go-ahead it needs to expand its Smart Grid initiative statewide following a successful pilot involving 42,000 smart meters in the Norman area. OG&E’s $366.4 million program includes $130 million of federal Smart Grid stimulus money. According to the Associated Press, two of the three members of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission voted in favor of the agreement; the third expressed a desire to see smart meters implemented in stages to be able to verify actual cost savings by smart meter customers. The decision comes a week after regulators in Maryland turned down Baltimore Gas & Electric’s ambitious Smart Grid proposal, also funded in part by stimulus money.

Quick Take: As utilities take their Smart Grid initiatives through the regulatory process there are going to be winners and losers – but also an opportunity for those coming to the party later on to leverage some valuable insight gleaned from these early proceedings.
