A decision by the administrative law judge for the Colorado PUC would allow Xcel Energy to charge customers $44.5 million to recover its SmartGridCity costs, according to a story in the Denver Business Journal. However, parties in the case have 20 days to appeal the decision with the commissioners.

Quick take: With technical challenges, cost overruns and ratepayer opposition, SmartGridCity has been a learning lab in more ways than project managers could have foreseen when Xcel set out in 2008 to test smart grid technologies in Boulder. And the lessons continue.
