The insider's guide to the modernization and automation of electric power

March 10 Webinar: Advice from the Experts on Fixing Your Smart Grid Talent Shortage
By Jesse Berst

Let’s face it, many utilities have operated pretty much the same way for decades. Similar job titles, similar processes, similar outcomes. But the findings from early deployments reveal that the Smart Grid will dramatically change the “traditional” organization model and the processes that support it.

Yet dealing with “the people side” of the Smart Grid equation can be even trickier than installing new Smart Grid technologies. It requires people to learn new skills, embrace new values and recruit new employees.

Don’t wait to be surprised by these organizational changes. Get ahead of the curve by registering now for our free March 10 webinar featuring a panel of experts who can show you how to apply a solid, systematic approach to manage – even profit from –  these changes.

High Performance in Talent and Organizations: How to Find, Manage and Retain the Smart People Needed for the Smart Grid is part of our Lessons from the Real World webinar series hosted by Smart Grid News in conjunction with Accenture, a global leader in management consulting, technology services and outsourcing.  It starts at 10:30 a.m. PST (1:30 p.m. EST) on Wednesday, March 10. Once again we’ve put together a panel of experienced professionals who will share what they’ve discovered working on actual Smart Grid pilots and deployments:

·         Bill Devereaux, PG&E -- Senior Director at PG&E responsible for the $2.2B program to install 10 million gas and electric smart meters across PG&E’s service territory and the implementation of the advanced business capabilities making use of the smart meter infrastructure. Additionally, since joining PG&E, Bill has assumed responsibility for the Customer Care Business Delivery Group.

·         Bernie Bujnowski, BJB Consulting -- has over 30 years of operational and regulatory experience in the utility industry.  His large project experience includes directing CIS implementations, work management solutions, and business strategy projects, including an AMI deployment for 1.4 million customers.

·         Susan Christensen and Brian Payne, Accenture -- partners in Accenture’s Talent and Organization Performance practice area for North American Utilities.  Susan’s specialties include Organizational Change Strategy and Organization Effectiveness.  She has worked with clients such as American Water, Ameren, BC Hydro, Conoco, Citgo, Constellation Energy, Duke, Exelon, Hydro One, Keyspan, PG&E, TXU Energy, and YPF.  Brian has worked with electric, gas and water utilities to manage large-scale organizational changes over the past 13 years. He is currently responsible for all workforce-related smart metering and Smart Grid opportunities across North America.

I’ll be there too as moderator and will be as interested as you are in hearing our panelists reveal what they’ve learned working on real-world Smart Grid projects. I know they’ll be sharing insights on:

·         3 typical Smart Grid starting points -- and why each one requires different approaches and skills

·         5 new skills your utility may need (including some you may not have considered such as analytics, security, and operations technology)

·         7 change management techniques that shift thinking -- even in the most conservative organizations

There’s more too – for instance, advice on when to use current employees versus when to recruit new ones versus when to outsource. But don’t wait too long to register as space is limited. Our last webinar with Accenture was hugely popular and we know this topic will draw lots of interest too.

As usual, we’ll save time for questions during the webinar, but feel free to use the Talk Back form below to suggest issues you’d like our panelists to cover and we’ll pass them along.

I hope you’ll join us March 10.
