. New York-based Global X Funds launched the Lithium ETF today. Global X says the lithium-related equities in the mix will give investors access to the complete lithium value chain, from mining and refining through lithium battery production. "Lithium is the lightest metal," said Jose C. Gonzalez, COO of Global X Funds. "When processed it has the capacity to store electric energy more efficiently than any other material. Efficient electric energy storage is necessary for all green energy products and the computer systems that control them – like electric cars, solar, wind and water power."
Meanwhile, over at Money Morning, Dr. Kent Moors (described there as one of the true gurus of the global energy sector and editor of "The Oil & Energy Investor," a newsletter for individual investors) has some observations on another ETF – the First Trust Nasdaq Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Index Fund (GRID) that was launched last November. He suggests after eight months it has enough liquidity to serve as a barometer of the Smart Grid sector as a whole. But he also calls out three separate Smart Grid companies as candidates for an “energized” portfolio – Prysmian S.P.A. Milano, Quanta Services and EnerNOC.
Quick take: We don’t pretend to know much about markets and can’t vouch for anyone else’s take either. But it does seem notable that key Smart Grid components are attracting this kind of interest.
