Smart Grid Spending Forecast: Almost $46 Billion by 2015 By SGN Staff Jul 8, 2010 - 3:09:03 PM
. Global Smart Grid spending over the next five years will approach $46 billion, with by far the greatest share — almost $41 billion — devoted to significant upgrades for outdated transmission and distribution infrastructure, according to a new market forecast by ABI Research. Larry Fisher, research director for NextGen, the ABI research unit that produced the study, said "Much of this infrastructure is outdated, and with the continuing increase in demand for power year after year, the grid cannot safely and reliably manage the loads of today and tomorrow without significant changes." As one would guess from the report's title, Smart Grid Applications: Smart Meters, Demand Response, and Distributed Generation, it also addresses the outlook for smart meter deployments and associated spending and implementation of other utility-level Smart Grid technologies, including synchrophasors and home area network communications chipsets.
Quick Take: As anyone who scans the news and the cascade of Smart Grid investment forecasts and studies can tell you, the numbers quoted rarely agree. But the trend of rapid investment can't be ignored as more countries accelerate their spending to meet the growing demand for safe, reliable power.
