1 Quick Take: Telvent is expanding into Australia with a single SCADA system that will manage both gas and electricity. We're seeing this "multi-utility" approach growing around the world, and not just in distribution management, but in smart metering as well. - By Jesse Berst
The two utilities serve a total of almost 1.3 million customers in Melbourne, the second largest city in Australia.
Telvent says its flexible, open architecture OASyS SCADA system allows easy integration with the utilities' current distribution management system and OSI PI Historian. Integrating data collection for both distribution networks into a single platform means UE and MG can take advantage of comprehensive, real-time data to improve day-to-day operations and hike efficiencies.
Additionally, the utilities gain quick historical data retrieval and support for multiple communications protocols that could extend the life of existing field devices. Another plus: the new system will have the capacity to accommodate future growth and network enhancement.
The partnership marks Telvent's first appearance on Australia's smart grid stage and an expansion of its operations in the country's gas market.
"This is an exciting opportunity for Telvent, because it is a multi-utility management system for both gas and electric distribution networks. Additionally, we are eager to enter Australia's smart grid market," said Ignacio Gonzalez, Telvent chairman and CEO.
