Quick Take: CURRENT struggled in the U.S. for years as it tried to make utilities forget it roots in the failed broadband-over-powerline technology. But it had to jump to Europe to rise from the ashes. Some of the software it is deploying there was originally conceived in the U.S. for Xcel's SmartGridCity in Boulder. - By Jesse Berst

 

Spain's Iberdrola, one of the world's largest utilities, has selected CURRENT to provide advanced metering, transformer supervision and network communications for a wide-scale deployment there this year.

 

The installation by the utility is part of a major expansion of its STAR Project (Network Remote Management and Automation Systems) that launched in Castellón, Spain in 2010. It is installing CURRENT's Connected Intelligence™ suite of products, which includes PRIME-based Intelligent Data Concentrators for advanced metering and transformer station supervision, and managed network communication gateways. Its OpenGrid® Networking enterprise software will be used for backhaul network management, provisioning and troubleshooting.

 

An Iberdrola official said CURRENT is a "key strategic supplier" to the utility and that he hoped the company would continue to have a critical role in Iberdrola's large-scale deployment of advanced metering and grid automation systems in Spain.

 

The STAR Project rollout is the largest, most comprehensive metering and grid automation initiative announced for 2012 in Europe, CURRENT says.
