1 A new report from IDC Energy Insights, Asia/Pacific Utility Industry 2012 Top 10 Predictions, details those smart grid implementation challenges and others, as well as what to expect from the region this year.
IDC notes that Asia/Pacific utilities will be "increasingly stretched" to meet internal and external expectations as well as those of regulators. And while new and more complex business models are being developed, the degree of collaboration between utilities, their business partners and customers needed to enhance efficiency is high and requires a clear understanding of the roles and obligations of all stakeholders.
The following is a brief sampling of IDC's predictions for utilities of the Asia/Pacific region:
· Smart grid momentum will continue, but will meet funding challenges because of inadequate government support
· The smarter utilities will concentrate on customers in their smart grid strategy, and the analytics segment will grow as utilities try to take advantage of smart meter data
· Renewable energy deployment will continue, but will be a disruptive force until grid-scale storage technologies develop further
