2. Get ready for "distributed diversity." Every part of the value chain -- generation, delivery, end use -- will be more diverse and more distributed:

• Generation will run the gamut from new centralized plants (including wind, solar thermal or even nuclear) to cogeneration, distributed generation and distributed renewables.
• The delivery infrastructure will have to be transformed. In particular, distribution must be upgraded to handle a world of variable renewables coupled with controllable demand and challenging uses such as server farms and electric vehicles.
• End-use will be grid-involved. End use will be increasingly connected to the smart grid, at the meter and behind the meter. Translation: strong growth in demand response, energy efficiency, energy management, grid-savvy appliances and more.
