PowerCents DC: Federal Officials Get Briefed on Smart Grid Customer Engagement By SGN Staff Jul 1, 2010 - 12:38:20 PM
. Representatives from eMeter, regulatory agencies, consumer advocates, utilities and others briefed members of the Executive Office of the President, DOE and the National Science and Technology Council today on a pilot project that evaluated both Smart Grid technologies and customer engagement. The PowerCents DC Program is said to be the first in the electric industry to test an integrated Smart Grid blend of dynamic pricing, multi-faceted consumer information feedback and smart appliance control. "This pilot shows that smart meters combined with smart prices and good energy information gives consumers meaningful energy saving opportunities," said Rick Morgan, Commissioner of the District of Columbia Public Service Commission. "In the pilot, over 90% of the customers saved money — and over 90% said they'd recommend it, with its features of dynamic prices, information and smart meters, to their family and friends." Chris King, eMeter chief regulatory officer, said his company is "thrilled that this administration is taking a closer look at successful demand response programs and what the federal government can do to drive energy efficiency through the Smart Grid."
Quick Take: This looks like a good case study for how to do it right: The technologies proved themselves and the great majority of customers participating got to see how the Smart Grid works and its benefits.
