. A representative sample of 1,003 U.S. consumers rated the importance of seven smart grid and smart meter benefit statements using a three point scale: not at all important; important, but only if it can be provided at no additional cost; and important enough to justify a total extra cost of $3-$4 on your monthly electric bill. The smart grid and smart meter benefits ranged from: eliminating the need for meter reading; delivering the power “quality” necessary to run our increasingly digital homes; saving money by providing real time access; and making it easier to connect renewable energy sources to the electricity grid.
The three highest rated benefits
About eight out of ten consumers rated all seven of the smart grid and smart meter benefits as important. The benefits that received the highest overall importance ratings
Yet, not every benefit was important enough to justify adding $3-$4 on monthly electric bills. When considering extra costs, far fewer (20%-30%) consumers rated that the benefits were important enough to help justify paying. Surprisingly, the benefit that received the highest percentage of consumers (30%) willing to pay was smart grid reduces greenhouse gas emissions by making it easier to connect renewable energy sources to the electricity grid.
